By Philip Kuepper
Cancer arrived, unannounced,
in the midst of life.
One might have hoped a writer’s
words would have stalled it,
stayed it, from coming closer.
Yet, the rush
of living comes in at one
from all directions at once.
One lives distracted with their being
so much. And cancer is
known to be a sneak,
surprise one with a verdict
that is beyond overturning,
cancer, the fugitive, the thief
that goes free, while its victim
is given a life sentence of death.
Sleep sweetly, Tom, knowing
the words you wrote live on,
words cancer cannot
ever eat the life out of.
