The President of Quintin Boat Club and the oldest member of Leander, Richard Hylton-Smith, died peacefully at his Henley home on 30 December, aged 103. I had the honour of interviewing him when he was in his 100th year in March 2013 and the resulting article can be read here.
Among his many achievements were an 86-year involvement in rowing with 72 of them ‘on the water’, a distinguished war record, a Henley medal, and a marriage of over 70 years. I think that most of us would be very content with just one of these accomplishments.

Richard had, to use a cliché from cricket, ‘a good innings’ – though perhaps we HTBS types should say that he had a very fine row over a very long course.
