The international youth regatta Coupe de la Jeunesse starts today with the opening ceremony in Castrelo de Miño, Spain. The regatta then runs until Sunday. Coupe de la Jeunesse is organised annually, though there was no regatta in 2020 due to COVID-19.
The regatta, for rowers 18 years and younger, racing on a 2,000-metre course, is open for 16 member countries, all from Europe and members of World Rowing. Denmark has not sent any crews to the regatta this year.
In the Coupe, the boat classes are held separately on each day of the two race days and points are awarded to the nations based on finishing positions in each boat class. This means that a competing country must have a strong overall team to be able to collect as many points as possible.
Only three nations have claimed victory in the Coupe since it was founded in 1985: Great Britain (15 wins), Italy (13; last year’s winner) and France (8 wins) – no regatta in 2020.
It is also these three countries that have the largest contingents at this year’s regatta, 32 crews each.
