Göran R Buckhorn writes:
Here follows chapter 17 of “The Seven Seat: A True Story of Rowing, Redemption, and Revenge”, Dan Boyne’s tale about his rowing and sculling days in the 1970s at Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut, a series published on Row2K’s website.
In this chapter, “The City of Brotherly Love”, Dan Boyne and the Trinity crew are arriving in Philadelphia by charter bus for the last race of the spring season, The Dad Vail. Coming down Kelly Drive, Dan’s friend, Peter, points out the statue of Kelly. Few of the young oarsmen know who Jack Kelly was.
With the men’s crew are also Trinity’s 18 female rowers, who are calling themselves “The Sultans of Swing” – and all the way down to Philly, the women have blasted the Dire Straits’ song again and again from their boom box. Someone managed to get hold of the tape to throw it out the bus window, replacing it with the Rolling Stones’ “Shattered”. Soon everyone is singing ‘Laughter, joy, and loneliness and sex and sex and sex and sex…’
When the bus stopped, Coach Graf stands up and tries to restore order, saying that they have a real chance to win the Jack Bratten Point Trophy, the pot for ‘overall points winners’. Then he adds, ‘and so, while I know that it will be a grave disappointment for some of you to hear, I want you all to abstain from any sex this weekend, which has been scientifically proven to reduce sports performance.’
Oh dear, how is this going to end?
