Göran R Buckhorn writes:

The 2018 Yale – Harvard races have started out well for Yale, who won the Combination Race on the Thames River yesterday evening.

Winning the two-mile race, the Bulldogs are now the holders of The James P. Snider Cup. According to the article “Yale – Harvard Regatta” on Wikipedia, the cup ‘was dedicated in honor of James P. “Jamie Sniderman” Snider by the Yale Heavyweight Crew Class of 2005 following the Harvard–Yale Regatta held on June 11, 2005. The cup was donated in honor of Jamie’s years of dedicated service to both the Yale Heavyweight Crew and the Yale Crew program as a whole’.

The two boats competing in the Combination Race are the Yale’s and Harvard’s 4th Varsity crews.

According to tradition, the winning crew are now entitled to paint ‘The Rock’, just south of Bartlett’s Cove, in the school’s colours. Standing on the opposite side of The Rock before yesterday evening’s race, I noted that The Rock was already blue with a big white ‘Y’.

Here is a three-minute video from the Combination Race that Yale Athletics department posted on YouTube yesterday:

Yale’s winning Combination crew were: Cox Katherine Hofmann, Stroke Lucas Peilert, 7 Andrew Joyce, 6 Bobby Jahrling, 5 Jack Morton, 4 Henry Kamp, 3 Alex Jeremijenko, 2 Jack Palmer and Bow Alex Lindsay (this according to the Regatta Programme, which mentions that there might be changes in the crews from when the programme was printed).

Today’s races will be held on the Thames River as follows:
3rd Varsity – 4:45 p.m.
2nd Varsity – 5:30 p.m.
Varsity – 6:30 p.m.

Follow the races live as they are streamed by Ivy League Network.

At Red Top, the red top is getting a new red top.

Attending Friday evening’s 2018 Regatta Cocktail Party at Harvard’s boathouse Red Top, where the schools’ alumni but also families, friends and locals, had gathered in unity to celebrate today’s Yale – Harvard Regatta, I noticed that the red top on Harvard’s boathouse was getting a ‘fresher-upper’. Carpenter and painters are none other than HTBS friends Bob Berry of ‘The Remote Coxswain fame’ and Irish rower Seamus from Noank RC.
